We are going to take a look at the geneations of Cain and Seth. God gave Adam and Eve another son to take the place of Able and carry on the promise in the family bloodline. So what we are going to look at today is the lineage of these two men.
First, we will look at Cain.
He messed up big time, but God is merciful. God didn’t immediately kill Cain. He allowed him to move to another city and have a life. The Bible records six generations of Cain’s descendants in Genesis. Here they are.
First, Cain built a city and named it after his son, Enoch.
His next four generations only leave their names: Enoch, Irad, Mehujail, Methusael.
Then there’s Lamech. He had two wives, and he killed a man. This family line contains murderers.
Lamech also had two wives and children. His kids did OK.
Jubal kept cattle and lived in tents.
Tubbal-cain worked in brass and iron.
For the most part they seemed to be hard-working “good” people -- all except for the murderers: Cain and Lamech.
Now let’s look at Seth and his descendants.
Starting with Seth: he was made in the image and likeness of God. When he was born, people began to call on the name of the LORD. What a lovely thing to be recorded about a person.
The next three generations left only their names: Cainan, Mahalaleel, and Jared.
Then comes Enoch. He walked with God and was not for God took him. Wow! He pleased God so much, he didn’t even have to die. It seems God just invited him home one day.
Methuselah is known for being the oldest man who ever lived. 969 years.
Note: The Bible records how long Seth’s descendants lived -- not so with Cain’s family.
Methusela's son, Lamech, had a very famous son.
Noah.
There was a prophecy about Noah when he was born: “He shall comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands."
He lived at a time that was very wicked. It was very much like the time we live in but in Noah's time it was so bad that he and his family were the only people who considered God. Everyone outside his family thought only of evil continually. But Noah obeyed God and built an ark for the saving of his family. It took him a hundred years to do it, but he completed what God told him to do. Sometimes God asks us to do hard things. Do it. God will help you.
Now let's compare these two bloodlines.
Cain's family is OK, sort of. They are doing what they want to do and most of it is not sin. But you never hear anything about God in the whole line.
Compare this with Seth’s line. God is mentioned over and over again. i.e. He was in God's likeness, he walked with God, etc.
Which family line do you want to be a part of?
In the age of grace that we now live in, we can choose.
We are all born into the family of “Cain”. We are born sinners.
But when we are “born again” of water and Spirit like the Bible says (Acts 2:38, John 3:3-7) then we become part of the kingdom of God. We are in a different family, a new lineage. You are grafted into the family of God.
The door is open to all.
The choice is yours.
